Summary

The AIRFLOW Prophylaxis Master (EMS product code FT-229) is a combined tabletop unit from EMS for its Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) protocol: AIRFLOW (supragingival air polishing), PERIOFLOW (subgingival air polishing) and PIEZON (piezoelectric scaling, "NO PAIN" technology) from one control unit with a touch panel and a wireless pedal. EMS presents the GBT Machine (K253254) as its successor, so ask a supplier about availability, service and parts for both units.

Who it may suit

It may be less suited to buyers who want to source powders from several suppliers, who only need supragingival polishing (see handpiece vs combined unit), or who prefer EMS's newer GBT Machine.

What is included (EMS U.S. page)

Control unit; AIRFLOW and PIEZON handpiece cords; PIEZON bottle; powder chambers PLUS and CLASSIC; CLASSIC powder; PLUS powder (3 units); GBT training tool kit; hoses; quick guide; reprocessing instructions. Night Cleaner, biofilm discloser and pedal options are listed "if available in your country". Confirm the exact kit, pedal and North American power cord with the supplier.

Powders

FDA's summary lists AIR-FLOW CLASSIC (sodium bicarbonate), SOFT and PERIO (glycine) and PLUS (erythritol). AIRFLOW PLUS has its own clearance (K171189, September 11, 2017, class I; erythritol with 0.05% cetyl pyridinium chloride as preservative; EMS says CPC is used in the U.S. and Canada). Ask the supplier whether other powders affect the warranty.

Installation and reprocessing

Water 2-5 bar and dry air 4.5-7 bar are required (IFU). Heat-sterilize handpieces between patients and follow the validated EMS instructions (CDC: handpieces and attachments that can be removed from the air and water lines must be cleaned and heat sterilized between patients). For dental unit water quality, CDC recommends output water of 500 CFU/mL or less of heterotrophic bacteria for routine non-surgical treatment.
