Best air polisher for a hygiene practice: how to choose

Request a quote / where to buy

Last updated: October 16, 2026. Independent reference. Preventio Hub has not bench-tested these devices, and we do not rank them: the best choice depends on your operatories, your scaler, your compressed air and your protocol. The tables show what manufacturers and regulators publish.

Short answer

What a hygiene practice should weigh

QuestionWhy it matters
How many rooms and how fast do you turn them?CDC says handpieces and attachments that can be removed from the air and water lines must be cleaned and heat sterilized between patients, following validated manufacturer instructions. Count the handpieces you need per day, not per unit.
Keep your scaler or replace it?A handpiece or air-only console only polishes. A combined unit replaces the scaler.
Do you need subgingival polishing?Labeling differs by device and handpiece (see table). The clinician decides the case.
Air and water at the chairPublished inlet needs range from about 39 to 116 psi of air. Ask your installer for your actual pressure and flow before choosing.
Powder policyMakers cover specific powders; some state that other powders void the warranty. Ask in writing.
ServiceLoan units, turnaround and parts in your state or province often matter more than a specification.

Notes: values come from each device's sheet on this site (manufacturer manuals, IFUs, FDA summaries); the Handy 3.0 figures are from a 2013 manual and the Combi Pro2 summary PDF is image-based. A 510(k) is a finding of substantial equivalence, not an FDA approval. Absence of a record in our search is not proof that none exists.

Which fits which practice? (not a ranking)

A handpiece may fit if each room already has a compatible coupling, you like your current scaler, and you want to add air polishing room by room at low outlay.

An air-only tabletop may fit if your unit's air or water is limited, you want a dedicated console (and, for the PWR Air, heated water) or you want to move one device between rooms, while keeping your scaler.

A combined unit may fit if you are replacing a scaler, want one console and one control panel, and have bench space (roughly 3.5 to 5 kg and 10 to 16 in long) plus compressed air and water connections.

Questions to ask suppliers

  1. What is the FDA 510(k) or Health Canada licence number for this exact model and kit?
  2. What air and water pressure and flow does it need at my coupling or inlet, in psi?
  3. Which handpieces and chambers are in the quote, and what does each extra handpiece cost?
  4. Which powders are covered, and does using others affect the warranty?
  5. How many sterilization cycles are validated, and what are the reprocessing steps?
  6. What is the warranty, service turnaround and loan-unit policy in my state or province?

Frequently asked questions

Which air polisher is best for a hygiene practice?

No single device wins on every criterion. Use the criteria above and ask several suppliers to quote the options that fit.

What does it cost?

Price on request for all models. We request quotes from several suppliers and aim to get you the best price.

Is an FDA 510(k) the same as approval?

No. It is a finding of substantial equivalence to a predicate device.

Do I still need a scaler?

With a handpiece or air-only tabletop, yes. A combined unit includes one.
